- Pastel Painting of Mourning Doves -
The Mourning Dove, also known as the American Mourning Dove or Rain Dove, is resident throughout the Greater Antilles, most of Mexico, the Continental United States, and southern Canada. The Mourning Dove remains one of our most abundant birds with a United States population estimated at 350 million. This Dove is also the most frequently hunted species in North America. Its ability to sustain such pressure stems from its prolific breeding; in warm areas, one pair may raise up to six broods in one year. It is a Songbird that most people recognize. Their wings can make an unusual whistling sound upon take-off and landing, and the Mourning Dove is a strong flier, capable of speeds up to 55 mph. The species has adapted well to areas altered by humans. It commonly nests in trees in cities or near farmsteads.
This is my entry for the California Upland Game Stamp. I spent a good 3 months studying and photographing doves to use for references on this painting. I decided to put the Dove weed and the lava rock as these are so common here in California. The dove feeds on the seeds from the Dove weed plant. I titled this painting "Flight 682" as this is the required number that had to be depected on the aluminum band on the doves leg. I received fourth place and I am looking forward to entering again next year. Doves are such a recognizable Song Bird with their unmistakable 'Cooing'. Backyard Birds are so much fun to watch!
