"Prickly Pair"
Limited Edition Giclee Print
- Pastel Painting of Gambels Quail -
Cover of Quail Unlimited Magazine

The Gambel's Quail are found almost exclusively in the southwestern United States, mainly in Arizona. Their range extends into Mexico, east to parts of Texas, west to California and a small part of southern Utah, Nevada and Colorado. The Gambel's Quail is named in honor of William Gambel, a 19th century Naturalist and Explorer of the Southwestern United States. Gambel's Quail live in warm deserts with brushy and thorny vegetation. Desert mountain foothills, mesquite springs, plains with diverse vegetation, are all home to good populations. Gambel's Quail prefer to roost in dense shrubs or trees at night. Shade from various types of desert vegetation is also very helpful. These quail prefer to remain Motionless and rely on Camouflage to avoid predators, especially if hidden by vegetation.
I had fun painting this pastel with two Gambel's Quail sitting in a Prickly Pear cactus. The Montezuma Quail, Scaled Quail, and Gambel's Quail all live in a Desert Habitat. I always Marval at Wildlife and how each species survives in its own Environment.
