The most familiar and widespread Goose in North America, the Canada Goose, can be found all across the Continent, from the Tundra in Canada to the Gulf Coast. Many populations are resident in Urban and Suburban areas. In appearance, a 'Resident' Canada Goose is identical to a migrant. The only difference between a resident and migrant are that the resident breeds in the United States and does not migrate. There are an estimated 5 million resident Canada geese and just 2 million migrant Canada geese in the Continental United States today. Canada geese usually start migrating south when the ground begins to freeze in the fall. The trip to the wintering grounds is a quick one because scientists have tracked geese that have flown up to 1,000 miles IN ONE DAY! Scientists believe that the characteristic 'V-shaped' flock of geese migrating serves two purposes. First, it creates a current of air along the lines of geese that makes it easier for individuals to fly. Second, it may allow for better communication and unity of the flock while in the air. Experienced individuals take turns leading the flock. The Canada Goose can live up to 24 years and will find a mate for life.

I had a lot of fun painting this Canada Goose and her Goslings. The Split-View of Brook Trout eyeing a Goose Down feather, while the Mother Goose eye's the trout, shows the Inter-relationship of all Wildlife Creatures. It is Drama at the base of Mount Shasta. Meanwhile, one of the Goslings sleeps right thru the 'Guarded Moment'.
