- Pastel Painting of a Cedar Waxwing in a Robinia Tree -

The Cedar Waxwing can be found from southern Canada south to the United States, Mexico and Panama. The name 'Waxwing' comes from the waxy red secretions found on the tips of the secondary feathers. The exact function of these tips is not known, but they may help attract mates. The Cedar Waxwing is one of the few North American birds that specializes in eating fruit. It can survive on fruit alone for several months. Because they eat so much fruit, Cedar Waxwings occasionally become intoxicated or even die when they run across overripe berries that have started to ferment and produce alcohol. Cedar waxwings are very social birds. They are non-territorial and will often groom each other. They travel in flocks of 40 or more and they will often appear in a spot with a good crop of berries. When they have eaten all the berries, they move on!

My Pastel Painting of the Cedar Waxwing was inspired when one day I looked into our front yard and saw several Waxwings in our Robinia Tree. This Songbird is so Distinctive that it is a real pleasure for any Backyard Bird watcher to view.
