- Pastel Painting of a Wood Duck Drake -

Found in forested wetlands, including along rivers, swamps, marshes, ponds, and lakes, the Wood Duck is one of only a few North American ducks that nest in trees. They prefer nesting over water so the young have a soft landing, but will nest up to 150 yards away from the shoreline. The day after they hatch, the young climb to the nest entrance and jump to the ground. The ducklings may jump from heights of over 100 feet without injury. The Wood Duck is the only North American duck that regularly produces two broods in one year. Considered by many as the most beautiful of American Waterfowl, the Wood Duck was hunted nearly to extinction during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In 1918 the hunting season was closed, and for the next two decades numbers rose steadily. There are now well over one million Wood Ducks in North America.

I painted this Wood Duck Drake with Admiration for its beautiful Coloring. The number of colors in most Ducks or Geese are minimal compared to the Color Spectrum worn by the Wood Duck. This Waterfowl is why I Love Painting Wildlife Art with all of its Diversity.
