- Pastel Painting of a Timber Wolf -

The Timber Wolf, also known as the Gray Wolf or simply Wolf, is the largest wild member of the Canidae family. It is an ice age survivor originating around 300,000 years ago. The Timber Wolf has a sense of smell 100 times stronger than humans. Timber Wolves run in packs of six to 12 animals, which makes it much easier to kill deer or moose. They can run up to 40 miles without resting. Though once abundant, the Timber Wolf inhabits a very small portion of its former range because of widespread destruction of its habitat, human encroachment of its habitat, and the resulting human-wolf encounters. Humans historically have had a complex and varied viewpoint of wolves. In many parts of the world, wolves were respected and revered, while in others they were feared and held in distaste. Many Native Americans feel that the Wolf lives within their Heart and Soul and that the Wolf is a Kindred Spirit.

"Out Of The Shadows", a Timber Wolf is the latest painting in my Wolf Series. My Love of Wildlife Art and Wolves made this Pastel Painting a Joy. The layering in of hair is time consuming, but I love it! Is this Timber Wolf cautiously watching a Cougar, Hungarily stalking a Deer or Elk, or about to Playfully Pounce on a Pack Member?
