"Bugle Call"
Limited Edition Print
- Graphite painting of a Bull Elk -

The Elk is one of the largest species of Deer in the world and one of the largest mammals in North America. In the Deer family, only the Moose is larger. Of the six subspecies of Elk known to have inhabited North America in historical times, four remain. They are the Roosevelt, Tule, Manitoban, and Rocky Mountain. The largest of the Subspecies is the Roosevelt Elk, which is found west of the Cascade Range in California, Oregon and Washington and into the Canadian province of British Columbia. Roosevelt Elk have been reintroduced into Alaska where the largest males are estimated to weigh up to 1300 pounds. Elk breed in the fall at which time a Bull Elk's antlers may reach 4 feet above its head, so that the animal towers 9 feet tall. Males engage in ritualized mating behaviors during the Rut, including posturing, antler wrestling, and bugling, a loud series of screams which establishes dominance over other males and attracts females. The bugle call is one of the most distinctive calls in nature.

This Graphite Drawing of a Bull Elk depicts the Elk making his bugle call. It is a cold Fall day and his voice can be heard for a long distance. Weather it be a Female Elk, Duck, Wolf or Quail, all will be able to hear him.
